Goal Setting: What’s Blocking You from Going After What You Want?

Ever sat down, pen in hand, full of ambition, your head and heart brimming with ideas and desires, ready to map out those big, bold goals…and suddenly felt completely frozen? It’s not just you. Goal setting might sound simple, but it brings up a cocktail of emotions—self-doubt, fear, and the nagging question: What if I don’t make it?

There’s a reason so many people get stuck at step one. A lot of us feel paralysed because, honestly, declaring what we want can be terrifying. Putting our dreams into words means we’re now accountable. It means we must do something about it. We’re faced with the reality that taking action could lead to failure, judgment, or even the pressure to keep performing if we do succeed.

The Real Blocks: Fear, Doubt, and Safety

Fear of failure, fear of success, and good old-fashioned self-doubt are the top reasons people avoid setting goals. These fears aren’t imaginary—they’re your brain’s way of trying to keep you safe.

Think about it: our brains love predictability. When you start pushing yourself toward something unknown or challenging, like that dream job or fitness goal, your mind kicks into overdrive, sending a parade of “what-ifs” marching through your head.

  • What if you mess up?
  • What if people judge you?
  • What if you must step out of your comfort zone?

It’s easy to retreat to the familiar—your routine, your comfort, your safety. But staying there? That’s a surefire way to keep you exactly where you are, far from the life you want.

Add to that our tendency toward self-doubt. We’ve all heard that voice telling us we’re not smart enough, talented enough, or organised enough to reach our goals. So, what do we do? We play it safe. We shrink down. We might even avoid saying what we really want because if we say it, we have to own it. We have to take that first scary step.

From my own experience, I became very good at setting goals—lots of goals—but I realised I was spending more time writing them than focusing on the top three that truly mattered to me. Goal setting isn’t just about clarity; it’s about prioritisation.

Getting Unstuck: Practical Steps and Tools for Goal Setting

Knowing your fears is the first step to tackling them. Once you’re aware of the ways you’re blocking yourself, you can start using tools and strategies to break the cycle.

Write It Down & Make It Public

Writing down your goals is a game-changer. When you put your goals into words, you’re moving from “wishful thinking” to “intention”. Don’t just think it—ink it.

Better yet, share it with someone you trust. Saying your goals out loud creates a layer of accountability. You’re far more likely to stay on track when someone else knows about it.

Use Apps to Stay on Target

Let’s face it: our brains need a bit of help staying focused. This is where apps like Trello and Notion come in handy. Trello can help you map out the individual steps needed to reach your goal, while Notion is perfect for creating a personal dashboard to track your progress.

For those needing a quick daily push, Habitica gamifies your tasks, turning them into a fun to-do list that rewards you for consistency. (I just heard about Habitica this month and am giving it a try—I’ll let you know how it goes! Hoping it’s like Duolingo for task reminders!)

Develop Self-Awareness & Mindset with Reflective Tools

Self-awareness is key to moving past self-doubt. Spend a few minutes each day writing about your progress, even if it’s just a couple of lines about what went well or where you felt challenged. Apps like Day One for journaling or even a simple note on your phone can help you stay in touch with the why behind your goals.

Why Goal Setting Is for You: Building Confidence Through Action

The best thing about setting a goal and taking action is that each small success builds confidence. Success isn’t about always getting it right—it’s about making progress.

When you take that first small step, no matter how tiny, you start building the resilience to tackle the next one. Confidence comes from knowing you’re willing to try, fail, and learn as you go.

As 2024 Draws to a Close: Reflect and Move Forward

As we approach the final weeks of 2024, take a moment to look back on the year. Ask yourself:

  • What do I really want from this bold and beautiful experience of living?
  • What goals do I want to master?
  • What small but meaningful steps am I willing to take to stay on course?

You’re the captain of this ship; the destination is yours to define.

Three Simple Tips to Start Right Now:

  1. Identify One Goal: Start small. Pick one goal that matters to you and commit to it.
  2. Break It Down: Split that goal into tiny, manageable steps. Big changes happen through small actions.
  3. Stay Accountable: Tell someone you trust about your goal. Accountability keeps you moving, even on tough days.

And remember, “Your playing small does not serve the world.” (Marianne Williamson)

So step up, set your goal, and go after it. Here’s to a future where you live boldly, intentionally, and on your own terms.
